3 US-led troops killed in E Afghanistan

US-led military officials in the Afghan capital Kabul confirmed the deaths in a statement, saying a first explosion killed one trooper earlier in the day before another claimed the lives of two others.

Further details regarding the forces’ nationalities or the exact locations of the attacks are yet to be released.

The recent deaths took the total number of the US-led troops killed in Afghanistan since Saturday to seven.

On Saturday, four US-led forces were killed in separate explosions in southern Afghanistan.

Roadside bombs and IEDs are by far the most lethal weapons, the Taliban militants have used against Afghan forces and occupying foreign troops in recent years.

Including the recent fatalities, at least 172 foreign forces, mostly Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

A total of 566 US-led troops lost their lives in Afghanistan in 2011. However, 2010 remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties, with a death toll of 711.

The almost-daily occurrence of military casualties in Afghanistan has intensified opposition in the United States and other NATO member states against the 2001-present US-led war in the country.
