3 Italian soldiers killed in Afghanistan

The troopers lost their lives on Monday after their Italian-made VTLM Lince overturned in a river, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of Shindand in Herat province.

The armored car “flipped over in the river, trapping the soldiers inside” as it raced to rescue another unit “blocked by particularly adverse weather conditions,” read a statement by the Italian defense ministry.

Reports say another soldier was wounded in the accident.

In September 2011, three Italian soldiers lost their lives in a road accident in Herat.

Italy, which deployed 3,800 forces to Afghanistan as part of US-led troops, has lost a total of 47 soldiers in the war-torn country.
