3 Hot Car-Sharing Services You Have to Try

Jesse Draper is creator and host of The Valley Girl Show, through which she’s become a spokesperson for startups and helped pioneer the way of new media content distribution. Formerly a Nickelodeon star, Draper is now CEO of Valley Girl‚ where she oversees the show and runs technology blog Lalawag.com.

The startup space is quickly filling with companies that promote sharing everything from extra rooms, to bikes. And these services are a great way to make some cash on the side. On Spinlister, you can make $400 per month for renting your bike. On AirBnB, one woman made $28,000 extra dollars in a year for renting out a room in her house.

Your automobile is another asset that can score you some big bucks. Here are three up-and-coming car-sharing services that we recommend.

RelayRides

Former Kiva employee Shelby Clark started RelayRides because he had to bike two miles in the sleet and cold in Boston just to get to a Zipcar and realized there were cars all over the place that he should be able to use. RelayRides is the only nationwide car-sharing service, and it’s now the only one to team up with a major automaker. Yesterday RelayRides officially launched their new partnership with General Motors (which is also an investor). The new service makes it easy to lock/unlock your GM car through OnStar’s API.

Getaround

Getaround is an hourly car-sharing service with 10,000 cars currently on the road. Co-founder Jessica Scorpio approaches car sharing from a problem-solving perspective. “We’re solving a problem that we call car overpopulation,” she explains. “There are 1 billion cars on the planet and 250 million cars in the U.S. that sit idle 92% of the time.”

“Our goal is to make Getaround a global mobility company,” says Scorpio, who used her political background to get car-sharing laws passed in California, Oregon and Washington.

Wheelz

Zipcar started the whole car-sharing movement and Wheelz is the only car-sharing company Zipcar has invested in to date. Wheelz also has occupied the college demographic, launching at Stanford, then Berkely, then UCLA and continuing down the line. Jeff Miller came up with the idea of Wheelz while working at Better Place, a company that is helping accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation.
