3 Egyptian soldiers injured in Sinai

Militants launched an attack on the security headquarters in al-Arish, north of the Sinai, during the early hours of Sunday, using rocket propelled grenades and automatic rifles.

“They positioned themselves on the roofs of buildings opposite the security headquarters and launched the rocket propelled grenades,” said an Egyptian official, whose name was not mentioned in the report.

He said the fighting was underway between the gunmen and Egyptian security forces around the security building.

In a separate incident on the same day, militants wounded three Egyptian border security guards in the town of Sheikh Zuwayyid near the border with Gaza.

Clashes between militants and Egyptian soldiers erupted on August 5, when at least 16 Egyptian border soldiers were killed and several others were injured.

Dozens of gunmen have been also killed in airstrikes carried out by the Egyptian air force in the village of Tumah in the Sinai.

The eruption of militant attacks in the Sinai region prompted the Egyptian government to deploy hundreds of troops in the restive region to prevent future violence.

Egypt has been trying to secure its borders following the 2011 revolution, which resulted in the ouster of dictator Hosni Mubarak.
