2nd USAF member guilty in sex scandal

Technical Sergeant Christopher Smith was found guilty of having unprofessional relationships with two female basic trainees and faces up to a year in prison.

The jury found Smith guilty of developing an intimate relationship with a teenage trainee. However, he was cleared of charges of making sexual advances towards her.

This comes less than two weeks after another member of the US Air Force Staff Sgt. Luis Walker was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of rape and sexual assault on at least 10 female recruits.

Prosecutors said Walker assaulted or had improper sexual or personal contact with at least 10 female recruits from October 2010 through January 2011.

According to the New York Times, the Lackland Air Force Base, which has about 475 instructors for 35,000 airmen who graduate every year, is where every American airman receives basic training.

About one in five recruits is female, pushed through eight weeks of basic training by a group of instructors, 90 percent of whom are men.

Sexual harassment of women is rampant in the US military where thousands of rape and sexual assault cases are recorded annually.
