The mayor of Ramat Gan was arrested and charged with bribery, according to a police reports in Tel Aviv, Israel.
The State Attorney’s Office filed an indictment Thursday against Ramat Gan Mayor Zvi Bar on bribery charges.
The mayor is accused of allegedly accepting bribes worth 1.9 million NIS or $510,000 from real estate developers in the city. He is also accused of fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and obstruction of justice.
The State also indicated that the assets in the amount of NIS 2.3 million or $620,000 will be confiscated.
The police investigation against Bar has been going on since 2008, when the police investigated suspicions that Bar, 78, accepted bribes from contractors to promote their interests.
Bar dismissed the accusations at the time and said that opposition elements were trying to sabotage my work.
However, police investigations continued and in 2011 the State informed Bar that he will be charged of crimes related to the period between 2000 and 2006.
The State claimed that Bar, who has served as mayor of Ramat Gan since 1989, accepted bribes from five real estate contractors in four different cases.
Bar’s lawyers, denied all charges against him, saying that he has done nothing but promote Ramat Gan’s welfare, which its residents enjoyed thereby voting for him in the last five elections.
Along with Bar three other business persons were charged: Shaul Lagziel, Haim Levy and David Gayer, on charges of money laundering and obstruction of justice.
