Meah Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem

A man was arrested, charged and convicted of killing a Jerusalem money changer, according to court proceedings in Jerusalem, Israel.

Mark Shapiro, 36, was convicted today, for murdering the money changer, a resident of the Meah Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem, during a robbery in 2004.

 

The Jerusalem District Court ruled that Shapiro stabbed the victim, Samuel Simantov, over 130 times of with 70 stab wounds to the victim’s back. He will be sentenced at a later date.

 

According to the indictment filed just over a year ago, Simantov was murdered inside his top floor apartment located on Shaarei Pinah Street, in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, on August 8, 2004.

Simantov’s body was found with 130 stab wounds.

 

Magen David Adom paramedics arrived on the scene and tried to revive him but to no avail. Police initially thought it might have been a terror attack but the evidence pointed in another direction.

Years later, a man told police that a man confessed to killing Simantov several years back, according to the court proceedings.

 

Following the information provided to the police they opened a new investigation and after


extensive operations were able to capture the suspect on December 5, 2011. Shapiro was arrested and remained silent, but finally admitted and reconstructed his actions to police.

 

He said he went to the house of Simantov to rob him because he knew that he had a lot of money in his home. But the deceased pulled a knife and a struggle erupted between the two. Shapiro was also injured but he managed to overpower the victim and he killed him.

Mark Shapiro’s attorney claimed that the incident was not murder it was just a brawl that spiraled out of control.
