Credit cards |
(Scroll down for video) If you make your purchases with a credit card be prepared to pay up to 4 percent more per transaction. This is a result of a new regulation that went into effect.
Starting Sunday, consumers may have to pay more for using credit cards.
Merchants that accept MasterCard and Visa, will soon be able to tack on a surcharge on your bill.
The charge is the aftermath of a class action settlement reached last July, ending years of legal battles between the merchants on the one hand, banks and credit card companies on the other.
After paying a whopping $6.05 billion settlement, Visa, MasterCard, several banks and credit card companies agreed to allow merchants to charge an additional fee for credit card purchases.
Ever seen a cash only sign at the mom and pop shop? All merchants have to pay a percentage of their profits to credit card companies to process in-store credit card payments.
Small merchants who do not want to take the transaction fee out of their profits may institute a cash only policy. Other stores set minimum unofficial credit card purchases or factor in the transaction fee prices in the purchases.
The proposed payment settlement last year is supposed to be equal to the cost of processing a credit card transaction, which usually comes to about 1.5 to 3 percent of the purchase. Under the agreement, merchants can not charge consumers more than 4 percent extra. They will also not be able to add additional charges for debit card transactions.
