Now, the Jerusalem District Court sentenced 19-year-old Muhammad Shuman of the north Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina to 13 years in prison Thursday for the March 2012 stabbing of soldier Yehudit Aharon on the Jerusalem Light Rail.

Aharon suffered moderate injuries from the attack.

Under a plea bargain, Shuman was convicted of attempted murder, possession of a knife and obstruction of justice. A revised indictment filed with the court determined that Shuman did not pre-plan the attack.

Shuman left his home on the morning of March 15, 2012, equipped with a knife. When he reached the door of the school where he studied, he decided to skip class. At 10:00 am he took the train

back home. When he was on the train, he saw the female soldier and sat opposite her.

A few seconds before the train pulled into the station, Shuman stabbed the Jewish woman several times and when the doors opened, a fled to his home, where he met his brother and told him what he had done.

Then he boarded a bus to Kalandia, in order to hide with relatives in Ramallah. During the bus ride, he threw the knife out the window. Police somehow got word of his whereabouts. At the junction of Kalandia, he was arrested. During questioning he admitted to the crime. He said he stabbed the soldier in retaliation for Israel’s actions against Palestinians.
