The incident took place on Tuesday when a bomb went off in a truck parked in the central market.
“At least 25 people were killed and around 70 wounded when a bomb blew up in a truck parked in the central market at around 10.15am,” a police official said.
The blast came just hours after twin car bomb attacks near the holy city of Karbala in central Iraq, Killing five Shia pilgrims and injuring 13 others.
The explosions are the latest in a series of bomb attacks on Shia worshippers who are preparing to celebrate the birth anniversary of the 12th Shia Imam, Mahdi (PBUH).
Meanwhile, three people including a policeman lost their lives in gunfire as well as a roadside bomb blast in the capital Baghdad and a nearby town.
Violence has increased in Iraq since December 2011 when an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Shia Muslims.
