Menachem Youlus surrounded by alleged Holocaust Torahs |
(Scroll down for video) A popular Baltimore Maryland rabbi who claimed to save Torah scrolls across Europe, began serving a 4 year prison sentence after lying about the origins of the Torahs he allegedly saved, according to press reports in Maryland.
Menachem Youlus, a Baltimore rabbi who ran a Jewish bookstore in Wheaton, Maryland, began serving a prison sentence of 51 months in the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, New York, after being convicted of two counts of mail and wire fraud in Manhattan federal court. He is scheduled to be incarcerated at least until August 26, 2016.
Youlus co-founded Save a Torah, Inc. in 2004, a charity that requested funds for rescuing and acquiring Torahs that were lost in the Holocaust. He also became known as the “Jewish Indiana Jones” for his alleged heroic adventures abroad to rescue these Torahs.
According to the sentencing memorandum, Youlus deposited contributions made to Save A Torah directly into his bank accounts and received thousands of dollars in paybacks for travel expenses abroad that never actually happened. At present, with the exception of isolated trips to Israel and Canada, Youlus, until today, never left the United States. He also claimed that these trips plunged him into debt and received an additional $144,000 from the charity.
The memo goes on to explain that Youlus greatly benefited by inflating the prices of these alleged Holocaust Torahs that actually came from used Torah dealers. He also inflated invoices to add
thousands of dollars in repair costs and false transportation costs.
“It is clear that during the time period of the fraud, Youlus purchased 24 used Torahs from these two Torah dealers for prices ranging from $3,250 to $ 9,500, with an average cost of $5,830.
Based on bank records and Save A Torah records, it is clear that Youlus received from $7,000 to $32,714 from the charity for every Torah, with most payments ranging between $10,000 to $20,000,” according to court documents.
