Jews at the Western Wall in Jerusalem |
The number of Jews in Israel continues to rise at a faster rate than the number of Arabs, according to the latest statistics released by the Israeli government.
The number of Jews in Israel passed the 6 million mark in November for the first time and the total population of Israel will reach 8 million in February, according to the Central Statistical Office.
The Jewish population represents 75.4 percent of the total and Arabs are 20.6 percent, representing a continuing trend of a higher birth rate for Jews and a lower Arab birth rate.
The remaining four percent of the Israeli population includes Christians and 319,000 people who call themselves Jews, but are not recognized as such in accordance with Jewish law. Almost all of them
are from the former Soviet Union.
Today, the total population stood at 7.981 million, or 1.8 percent more than the previous year.
The figures do not include temporary residents and foreign workers.
New immigrants represented a smaller increase in the number of Jews, with just 16,500 immigrating to Israel in 2012.
North American immigration came in at about 4,000.
