A Jewish community official, who was a former member of the executive of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of rape, according to police reports.
A judge in Sydney, has dismissed a request to omit the name and company name of a prominent refugee lawyer who is accused of the sexual assaults.
David Bitel, 60, was arrested earlier this week and charged with three counts of indecent assault and four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
Police said the victims were all men of Asian origin and the incidents occurred in the Sydney office
of Bitel between 1995 and 2004.
Today, Bitel’s lawyer argued that the firm Parish Patience Immigration Lawyers could collapse if its name or Bitel’s name became known which will result in lost customers.
The lawyer claimed that 35 people could lose their jobs if the names are revealed to the public.
Lawyers for the press argued there was no evidence that this would happen and a judge dismissed the request.
Bitel is due to face court next month.
He faces up to life in prison if convicted of the rapes.
