(Scroll down for video) Russian President Vladimir Putin, accused a Pussy Riot member of hatred towards the Jews, according to news media reports.
During a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused at least one member of the Pussy Riot punk band of committing an anti-Semitic act.
Earlier, Merkel had criticized Russia for jailing three members of the Pussy Riot for organizing a protest against Putin in the interior of a cathedral.
Putin said that a member of the Pussy Riot before the Cathedral Moscow protest, had demanded that the city should get rid of the Jews.
“Does Chancellor Merkel know that formerly one of the activists of the Pussy Riot hung an effigy of a Jew, saying that these people should be killed?” Putin said. “You and I cannot support those who take an anti-Semitic stance. I ask you to take this into account as well.”
The group that organized the protest in 2008, said that Putin misrepresented their protest.
In fact, the group said the protest was an attack against intolerance. They were targeting policies of the mayor of Moscow, Yury Luzhkov, who took a hard line on marginal groups, illegal immigrants, and
homosexuals.
Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevichto is said to have taken part in the protest.
Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were convicted along with Samutsevich of vandalism motivated by religious hatred.
Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova are serving two years imprisonment in penal colonies, while Samutsevich was given a suspended sentence on appeal.
