Praying for the hurricane victims

Israeli students prayed for the U.S. as Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast of the United States, killing dozens and causing an estimated $20 billion in damage.

Students recited chapters of Psalms or Tehillim, as a prayer for those affected by the storm and for the 100 schools affiliated in the AMIT educational network.

Dr. Amnon Eldar, an AMIT Director explained that for many students, the prayers were a way to reward those who have helped them. “We have 25,000 students,” he said. “Many of them are in Sderot, Ashkelon, Beer Sheva and when they are threatened by rocket attacks, U.S. Jews pray for them, support them, come visit and donate money, because they are our brothers, our flesh and blood.”

“Most U.S. citizens are good friends with the state of Israel and when they are in trouble we feel a real need to pray for them,” he explained.

On a more personal level, he added, “Every one of the 25,000 students of the AMIT network owes a debt of gratitude to AMIT women in the United States who established the school network and allowed it to succeed by investing in the students from around the country.”

Rabbi Shimon Shushan of the AMIT yeshiva in Petach Tikva said: “We explained to the students that we have a moral obligation to help our friends and we believe we have the power to do the little that is in our hands. That is why we prayed for our brothers in the United States during this difficult time.”
