Vincent Browne |
(Scroll down for video) A popular Irish TV host called Israel the cancer of the world, according to reports.
The popular Irish speaker and columnist rejected accusations that he is anti-Semitic, after calling Israel “the cancer in foreign affairs” during a broadcast.
“Israel is cancer in foreign affairs. They are polarizing the Islamic world against the rest of the world,” Vincent Browne said last week in his TV3 channel program, “Tonight with Vincent Browne.”
“Unless we solve the problem of Israel and the Palestinians in that part of the world, there will be conflict and disharmony with huge injustice. They stole the land from the Muslims,” he said.
According to the Irish newspaper, Browne said he would not apologize for the comments, saying that his comments were justified.
“What bothers me is the suggestion that because you are critical of Israel, you are automatically anti-Semitic. I think that’s unacceptable,” he told the newspaper.
Israel’s deputy ambassador to Ireland Nurit Tinari-Modai said the embassy had received calls and emails criticizing the comments.
“Today we received phone calls and emails from outraged Irish citizens complaining about ongoing comments of Mr. Brown spewing his hatred toward the Jewish people and the Jewish state,”
according to the news media.
No complaints have been filed so far against the TV host so far, a spokesperson for TV3 said.
“My grandparents were brutally murdered on European soil during the Holocaust,” one listener told the news media. “I never thought that the day will come when a TV channel would make racist and anti-Semitic comments.”
She said the embassy had approached TV3 and offered to provide a pro-Israel activist to appear on the show. The TV channel refused the request.
