A Jewish groom abandoned his celebration in order to save another life, according to reports.
Arie Jaffe, one of the volunteer paramedics of United Hatzalah, celebrated his special occasion last Saturday at the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem.
All eyes were on him because he is also the grandson of the founder of the congregation and the son of the famous leader of the synagogue choir.
He just finished reading from the Torah scroll and was about to descend back to his seat.
He could barely get to his seat when he felt his emergency phone vibrating in his belt, which could only mean one thing: there was an emergency in his immediate neighborhood. The message was followed by shouts from the street. Jaffe did not need to see more.
He abandoned the celebration, leaving hundreds of spectators and the largest synagogue in Jerusalem in a second without explaining. He ran out of the building to find an elderly member of the congregation lying on the road.
The 97-year-old had left the service early and was hit by a car while crossing the street. His caregiver had time to jump out of the way but the old man could not do the same and was seriously injured.
“I started to resurrect him immediately and was soon joined by my brothers and cousins who are also emergency workers,” Jaffe. They also brought the necessary equipment.”
After the arrival of an ambulance the man was taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in critical condition.
