Jews got together to sue social media giant twitter after a large increase of anti-Jewish tweets appeared on their website recently.
After learning about the action, twitter agreed to remove racist and anti-Semitic tweets under several hash tags after a Jewish group threatened to sue the social network on the grounds of national laws against hate speech, the organization said. The decision comes one day after twitter bowed to German law and blocked an account from a neo-Nazi group.
The freewheeling social network is increasingly running into European anti-discrimination laws, many of which date from after the Holocaust by governments that recognized the contribution of years of hatred for the Nazi attempt to annihilate the Jews. Friday’s action, which was not carried out immediately, could mark a new stage for the famous company that has rejected efforts to monitor its millions of users before.
But it is not entirely clear how the social network plans to carry out the agreement or in what timeframe.
“Twitter does not mediate content,” the company said in a statement.” If we are alerted to the
content which may be in violation of our terms of service, we will investigate each report and
respond according to the policies and procedures described in our support pages.”
Company policy requires that international users meet local laws regarding online conduct and acceptable content. Twitter also prohibits any content with direct threats of violence.
The French Union of Jewish Students, which planned to provide Twitter with a list of offensive tweets to pull, said they still could file a formal complaint against the social network to bring tweeters to justice. The union held a press conference late Thursday with twitter executives in California.
