iPhone 5 in Gaza store |
Some pro-Palestinian activists are wondering how so called poor Palestinians in Gaza are able to snatch up the new iPhone 5 that costs about $1,500.00, according to reports.
The new Apple iPhone 5 is selling well in the Gaza Strip despite the inflated prices, reaching the Palestinian enclave through smuggling tunnels, even before it reached Israel’s high-tech hub next door.
The cutting-edge smart phone is selling for almost twice what it costs in the United States. The inflated price is a result of the intermediaries in its tortuous delivery route from Dubai through tunnels under Egypt.
The iPhone 5 will not be available until December in Israel. Israel along with Egypt maintains a partial blockade of Gaza to keep out anything that could be used for military purposes.
But the phones have been available for a couple of weeks in Gaza and were on display Monday in three separate mobile stores within a block in the center of Gaza City.
Prices ranged from 4,500 Israeli shekels or $1,170 for the 16GB model to 5,700 Israeli shekels or $1,480 for 64GB model.
“I ordered 30 and I’ve sold 20 so far,” a trader said. “We can order as much as we want. But most
people are waiting for the price to drop. They are very expensive.”
The iPhone 5, released last month, retails for $650 to $850 for the 16 and 64 GB versions in the United States.
Apple does not have an official store or dealer in Gaza.
As was reported last week, iPhone 5’s controversial maps application does not show Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the World Clock application shows Jerusalem as a city without a country. Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal and indivisible capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of the state they aspire to create in a peace agreement with Israel.
