El Al Israel Airlines plane
It seems that Israelis will soon lose a key transportation method to Cairo, Egypt.
Israel’s national airline says it will stop flying to Cairo, Egypt despite the fact that the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt mandates flights between the countries.
In a letter to Foreign Minister of Israel published this week by an Israeli newspaper, El Al Israel Airlines CEO Eliezer Shkedi said flights are nearly empty, and the airline cannot afford to pay for the security and high operating costs.
El Al Israel Airlines declined to comment. But Irena Etinger, spokesperson for Foreign Minister Avigdor
Lieberman, confirmed the letter.
Under the historic 1979 peace agreement, Israel and Egypt agreed to operate flights between the two countries.
But few Israelis felt safe visiting Cairo, and their numbers have decreased after the Egyptian revolution last year.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yigal Palmor said that if El Al Israel Airlines cancel their service, another airline will have to offer flights to Cairo, according to the peace agreement.
