Israeli Muslims protest in Israel
The anti-Islamic movie protests have now spread to Israel, according to reports in the news media.
Hundreds of Israeli Muslims protested on Saturday across the north of the country against a provocation against Islam that sparked violent protests in the Muslim world, police said.
Another 150 Palestinians demonstrated throughout Muslim East Jerusalem, where they tried to march to a building housing the U.S. Consulate. “The people involved in the protest tried to break through to the U.S. consulate,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. “Israeli police quickly arrived on the scene and dispersed them all. The organizer was arrested.”
A police spokesman said that about 100 people demonstrated peacefully in Nazareth, the largest Muslim city in Israel, and around 250 marched in other cities, villages and crossroads.
An Israeli news site said the demonstrations were called by the country’s Islamic Movement and the protesters chanted “With our blood and our soul we sacrifice for you, Holy Prophet.” Rosenfeld said the police presence in Jerusalem would be increased from Sunday for the two-day Jewish New Year’s holiday, Rosh Hashanah, which begins later in the day. “There will be increased police presence for the Jewish holidays,” he said.
A low budget film produced in the United States prompted a bloody wave of anti-American violence
in Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen and in several other countries all over the Muslim world.
On Friday, thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in Gaza and hundreds of people protested in Israel
East Jerusalem, where clashes with the Israeli police were reported.
On Thursday, about 60 Israeli Muslims participated in a protest against the Islamic movie at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv.
Protest have now been reported in non-Muslim countries such as Australia.
The Israeli Muslim community is rooted in the 160,000 Palestinians who remained in their land after the creation of Israel in 1948. Israel puts the number today to 1.6 million, although this figure includes about 300,000 in East Jerusalem, some of them with Israeli citizenship.
