nsnbc : Twenty-one political parties have registered to run in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region’s (KAR) election set for November 1 when there will be held parliamentary as well as presidential elections.
The High Election and Referendum Commission (IHERC) of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region (KAR) of Iraq announced the election date on Thursday and published a list of twenty-one entities that have been registered for the parliamentary elections.
However, the Commission also warned that election campaigning cannot begin until the individual candidates running for the parties have ben vetted and approved. The 21 parties on the IHERC list are:
- Coalition for Democracy and Justice list
- Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)
- Turkmen Development Party
- Turkmen Democratic Movement in Kurdistan
- Change Movement (Gorran)
- Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU)
- Bet-Nahrain Democratic Party
- Tak Armenian Political Entity (Aram Birzo Hamo)
- Tak Armenian Political Entity (Obar Sipan Gharib)
- Turkmen Reform Party
- Kurdistan Islamic Group (Komal)
- Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)
- Yezidi Democratic Party
- Kurdistan Toilers Party
- Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party
- Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council
- Kurdistan Communist Party
- New Generation List
- Kurdistan Conservative Party
- Assyrian Patriotic Party
- Kurdistan Workers and Toilers Party
The last parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region were held in 2013. Presidential elections haven’t been held since 2009. After the 2013 election the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) won 38 seats in parliament while Gorran won 24, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) 18, the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) 10 and Komal won 6 seats.
The KDP formed a coalition government. President Masoud Barzani affirmed that neither he nor any of his family members will run in the 2017 presidential elections.
