$200k reward to find drug crusader’s remains

The New South Wales Government has announced a $200,000 reward for information about the location of the remains of murdered Griffith businessman Donald Mackay.

It will be 35 years on Sunday since the anti-drug campaigner and Liberal Party candidate disappeared from a car park in the town.

Police found the 43-year-old’s van keys, a blood smear and spent cartridges at the scene.

Mr Mackay had given evidence about drug crime to the police and a later royal commission named several local crime figures who may have ordered the killing.

James Bazley served time in Victoria for conspiracy to murder, but no-one has ever been charged with the murder itself.

At a press conference today, police were playing down the importance of fresh information about Mr Mackay’s whereabouts.

Detective Inspector John Leaman says they have received countless tip-offs over the years.

“Of all those other pieces of information we’ve received, we’ve assessed that and we’ll assess this and that will dictate our next course of action,” he said.

Police Minister Mike Gallacher has urged anyone who knows something to come forward.

“Someone out there knows where Mr Mackay’s remains are, and that is information that would provide a grieving family some closure,” he said.

“This family has lived for 35 years not knowing what happened to their loved one. At the very least, they deserve to know his final resting place.”

Superintendent Michael Rowan from the Griffith Local Area Command says anyone who comes forward will be protected.

“It can be dealt with anonymously or they can write to me or they can write to police care of the Griffith Police Station,” he said.

“Information will be dealt with in confidence if that’s what the individual wants. If that persons comes forward we can ensure that, if required, their identity is maintained on an anonymous basis.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Griffith Local Area Command on (02) 6969 4310 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
