200 protesters arrested in German rally

“[There have been] at least 200 arrests” and “many wounded” during the protest which was part of a European day of “action against capitalism,” an event organizer said on Saturday.

“Lots of people have suffered bruising, there’s at least one confirmed fracture and many people suffered from the effects of teargas used by the police,” he added.

Organizers said an estimated 6,000 people turned out for the protest rally. The clashes broke out after the protesters marched on the European Central Bank headquarters to demand an end to capitalism and the dominance of banks.

The protesters also denounced the “neo-liberal” crisis management of their country and the wider European Union. They blamed Europe’s capitalist system for the debt crisis in the continent.

The protests have been inspired by New York’s Occupy Wall Street movement which sparked mass rallies in hundreds of cities worldwide.

German protesters fear the economic crisis will lead to ever-higher national debt at the expense of the poor.
