2 killed, several injured in US storms

The massive system of tornadoes and violent winds on Wednesday swept through the states of Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky and Arkansas also overturning vehicles, downing trees and power lines and causing major damages.

A local TV station in the city of Atlanta aired video images showing a massive funnel cloud bearing down on the city of Adairsville, nearly 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Atlanta, as the stormed swept through the city’s downtown area, destroying homes and demolishing part of a major manufacturing factory.

At least one person was reported killed and nine more were taken to area hospitals for injuries, the Georgia’s emergency management authorities announced.


Another death was reported in the state of Tennessee, where a tree fell onto a storage shed in which a man had taken shelter.

Dangerous winds ripped through the entire southeastern region of the country, with gusts powerful enough to tumble tractor-trailers in a number of locations.

Authorities further announced that they were yet investigating several locations to determine whether damage was caused by tornadoes.

Since Tuesday, the system has reportedly inflicted major damage across a swath extending from Missouri to Georgia.

Moreover, another person was reportedly injured by lightning in the state of Arkansas during the storm’s eastward trek.

Additionally, two people suffered minor injuries when a mobile home was blown off its foundation in Kentucky.

Another injury was also reported in Mississippi, where authorities commended residents for heeding warnings and being prepared.

In Tennessee, state officials confirmed that a tornado with top wind speeds of 115 miles per hour touched down in Mount Juliet. No serious injuries were reported there. At least six other tornadoes were reported across the state.
