The worst construction accident in the country in eight years took place on Wednesday when a scaffolding collapsed as the workers were pouring cement into a mold at the construction site of the new subway link of Downtown Line, AFP reported.
The two Chinese were pinned down in wet concrete by falling metal and wood chunks from the supporting structure, a spokesman for the Singaporean Civil Defense Force said.
The spokesman added that the tunnel itself “is still intact” and that only the scaffolding gave in.
The injured workers, who sustained minor injuries, were transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
According to local officials, the accident did not disrupt train operations as it happened in the new underground train line, which is being constructed to be connected to Bugis MRT Station — the existing subway line. Downtown Line is due to open at three stages starting next year.
The incident was the latest construction accident in the country’s subway network since December 2011.
A commission tasked with investigating last year’s accident said using old equipment and poor maintenance by the SMRT Corporation, which operates the existing network, were the main reasons behind the mishap.
In 2004, four people died when part of a subway tunnel fell in during construction operations.
Most workers in Singapore’s construction sector are citizens from China, India, and Bangladesh.
With a population of more than five million, the Southeast Asian country’s metro system has become increasingly overcrowded.
