1950s historical drama Call the Midwife to debut in America

“After Call the Midwife or if I do anything in-between I want to make sure
it’s really different. I’m concentrating on having really varied roles,” She
told The Daily Telegraph.

“Interesting things crop up I don’t know what is going to happen. Who knows? I
will go wherever the good writing is. I love film, I love TV and I love
theatre. For me it is all about the writers and interesting characters.”

The actress, who was in Los Angeles between filming series two of the drama,
still takes the train to work in the mornings, but has found her new found
fame has brought her some unusual encounters.

One time a fan followed her to the buffet carriage and gave her a free biscuit
in exchange for an autograph. Another time a young woman kept peeping
through the gap between the chairs.

She has also experienced some really touching encounters.

“One of the best moments for me was again when I was on the train on the way
to work a young woman started acting a bit shifty around me. I kind of moved
a couple of carriages along and she sort of moved closer and kept looking at
me,” she said.

“It turned out she was training to be a midwife and she’d read the book way
before the series had come out and she just wanted to say thank you and how
thrilled she was and how realistic it was.

“She was physically beside herself at the series and I remember thinking to
myself ‘oh it’s so worth it’. It really touched people.”

As to whether Raine has been put off having children herself after some of the
gore of old-fashioned childbirth, she says certainly not but it wouldn’t be
for several years yet.

The most unusual thing she has learned from the show? Aside from various
encounters with prosthetic babies, pinards, and glass rectal tubes, learning
how to deliver a placenta was an experience she can never forget.

Call the Midwife premiers in the US in September.
