190 hopefuls win direct Majlis seats

The nation’s Election Headquarters announced Sunday that vote counting was still underway in the populous capital of Tehran, while senior incumbent principlist lawmakers Gholam Ali Hadad Adel and Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi are leading Tehran’s top 60 list.

In 20 constituencies, candidates with highest vote count but less than 50 percent of casted votes will again contest in the run-off poll, the official body said.

More than 64 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in Iran’s parliamentary election, with 75 percent of the candidates from the principlist camp winning seats in the legislature, according to unconfirmed results.

Over 48 million Iranian citizens were eligible to vote in the election, 3.9 million of them for the first time.

Voter turnout in Tehran, however, reportedly stood at 48 percent.
