15 die in bus crash in north China

Provincial traffic police authorities said that the bus driver lost control, causing the vehicle to fall 50 meters into a gorge near Jincheng city in Gaoping county, 732 kilometers west of the capital Beijing, at 9:25 a.m. local time (0125 GMT) on Saturday.

Local officials said that 19 people had been rescued. Survivors were taken to two local hospitals, where some are still receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

The bus was en route to Jiyuan city in neighboring Henan province when it crashed. It was operated by a state-run firm from Henan’s Sanmenxia city.

China’s roads are some of the most dangerous in the world, with traffic accidents leading to tens of thousands of deaths annually.

In 2009, almost 70,000 people died in road accidents in China — nearly 190 fatalities a day — according to official police statistics.

A study in 2008 found that fatalities from road accidents had nearly doubled over the past two decades and were likely to surge further as more and more Chinese seek car ownership.
