nsnbc : The largest drug bust in Taiwan’s history went down when police in Kaohsiung raided a fishing boat docked at a pier to discover 126 packages containing almost 1,300 kilogram of ketamine.
The Kaohsiung District Prosecutor reported that Friday’s bust of ketamine is the largest drug bust in Taiwan’s history. Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reports that the exact amount of ketamine seized by officers was 1,289.6 kg, which is estimated to have an approximate value of NT$3 billion or US$102 million.
The captain of the fishing vessel has been detained by police for questioning, and five Indonesian crew members were arrested. However, the Indonesians were reportedly turned over to the agency they had been hired by to work on the fishing boat.
The ship, called the Sheng Mi Lan, had been under surveillance since early January, after police received a tip that a drug smuggling ring operating in the waters around Kaohsiung, according to CNA.
It is currently uncertain whether the ketamine was destined for the Taiwanese market or if it was in transit. The use of ketamine as recreational drug and as drug to spice up other drugs like extasy, heroin and other illicit drugs.
Many experts in drugs including social workers, law enforcement officers and not least users stress that prohibition of traditional substances for recreational use is one of the main drivers behind the use of more dangerous and untried drugs and the development of dangerous designer drugs like flakka.
