But the issue has become so worryingly prevalent at the Florida university
that a state law was passed in 2005 which made ‘hazing’ which causes serious
bodily injury a crime, regardless of whether the victim consents.
In Mr Champion’s case it is reported that he was taking part in a ceremony
known as ‘Crossing Bus C’. The ritual involves walking the length of the
aisle while being beaten.
The month after Mr Champion’s death another Marching 100 band member, Bria
Shante Hunter, was beaten so badly in a hazing incident she was left with a
broken thigh and blood clots in her legs.
She was allegedly hit with a metal ruler and fists as part of the induction
ceremony for a group called the ‘Red Dawg Order’, a clique of Marching 100
members from Georgia.
Three band members have been charged with ‘hazing’ in the incident involving
in Miss Hunter.
Other incidents include the ‘paddling’ of a clarinet player Ivery Luckey who
was hospitalised in 1998 after, he said, he was paddled 300 times. And in
2001, band member Marcus Parker suffered kidney damage because of a paddle
beating.
Even staff members have been allegedly involved.
