13 Afghan officials held on fraud charges

Abu Bakar Rafi, head of the anti-corruption department at the Attorney General’s Office, said the suspects, including three directors, were arrested on Saturday morning in the capital Kabul.

He added that the detainees are accused of misappropriating 25 million afghanis (USD 518,887), which had been allocated for the implementation of small projects in certain districts across the country last year.

The offenders allegedly falsified official records and bills in order to siphon off the money.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Finance, Wahidullah Ghazikhel, confirmed that several employees of the ministry had been held on fraud charges. He did not provide further details.
