120 killed in attack on Yemen army parade

About 350 others were also wounded after a bomber, who was reportedly wearing an army uniform, blew himself up among a group of soldiers at al-Sabin Square, near the presidential palace, on Monday as a battalion of Yemeni soldiers was rehearsing for an army parade to mark the 22nd anniversary of the unification of north and south Yemen.

According to Yemeni security officials, the explosion occurred shortly before Defense Minister Nasser Ahmed and the army chief-of-staff were expected to greet the troops.

Most of the casualties are reportedd to be from the Central Security Service commanded by Yahya Saleh, a nephew of deposed ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh. Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi sacked Yahya Saleh from his post shortly after the attack.

It is the deadliest attack in Yemen since President Hadi took power in February. Yemeni officials say the number of casualties is expected to rise.

The attack came a day after three US contractors training Yemen’s coast guard were shot and wounded by unidentified gunmen in the eastern Red Sea port of Hodeida.

Although no person or group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, some reports suggest that deposed ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh might be behind it while some others blame al-Qaeda.
