117,000 affected by floods in NE Brazil

The ministry said on Monday that 12,100 people lost their homes in the northwestern state and over 100,000 people had to abandon them due to the rising water levels of the Acre River.

The floods have caused at least one death so far. The victim was killed by an electric shock on Friday while he was helping a family evacuate from a flooded area.

A state of emergency has been declared in several of Acre’s largest towns, including the state capital Rio Branco, where 15 percent of the electric energy network was turned off as a security precaution.

Several days of heavy rains in the state have caused the waters of the Acre River to rise to a dangerous level. Currently, it stands at 17.6 meters above the regular level, according local authorities.

Last week, the federal government announced a $2.94 million fund to support relief works in the state.

Weather forecasters say that steady rainfall will continue in the area for the next few days and the situation is likely to get worse.
