10,000 people flee DR Congo fighting

On Friday, fighting continued in the eastern jungle region where Congolese army defectors, led by General Jean Bosco Ntaganda, started a rebellion against government forces, AFP reported.

Ntaganda, known by his nom-de-guerre “Terminator,” is wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges, including recruiting child soldiers.

Some fighters from his National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP) said on Monday that they had established a new group, the March 23 Movement, to revive the peace deal that merged eastern rebel forces into the military in 2009.

About 7,500 people fled to Rwanda from Nord Kivu province, said Antoine Ruvebana, who works with Rwanda’s Disaster Management Ministry.

Sakura Atsumi, the deputy representative for UNHCR in Uganda, said some 3,000 individuals had crossed into Uganda from Congo.

Last month, hundreds of ex-CNDP members rebelled against Kinshasa, protesting against mistreatment in the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).

On Sunday, FARDC issued a statement saying that it had ended military operations in the eastern Congo and had brought the mutiny under control. However, it appears armed conflict has now returned to the war-torn region.

Congo has faced numerous problems over the past few decades, such as grinding poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and a war in the east of the country that has dragged on for over a decade and left over 5.5 million people dead.
