100 calls to SES in Melbourne hailstorm

The State Emergency Services (SES) have received around 350 calls for help from homes in Melbourne’s west which have been battered by large hailstones.

SES spokesman Lachlan Quick says the hailstones, some as large as lemons, have ripped through skylights, windows and roof tiles in Taylors Lakes, Sunshine and Keilor.

“We have a staff on alert because the storm front is moving across to Melbourne’s east,” Mr Quick said.

He advised people to stay away from windows in their homes if the storm hits in their suburb.

“And anyone who doesn’t need to be driving should stay off the road,” he said.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Claire Yeo says parts of Melbourne also face the threat of flash-flooding.

The bureau has forecast very dangerous thunderstorms around Melbourne Airport and surrounding suburbs with severe thunderstorms in other parts of the city being accompanied by destructive winds, very heavy rainfall and hail, and flash flooding.

But the storms are expected to pass during the night and Ms Yeo says finer conditions will prevail for the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India at the MCG.
