10 die in battle in eastern Afghanistan

Before dawn on Friday, militants detonated explosives at the gate and then forced their way into the compound, located in the Kadmesh district of Nuristan province, killing four women and three policemen, The Associated Press reported.

Three militants were also killed.

The compound includes both the district government’s offices and the homes of district officials and police.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which was carried out by 17 armed militants according to initial reports.

Nuristan Governor Tamim Nuristani said NATO planes provided only limited air support during Friday’s attack, which led to a battle lasting several hours.

The assailants were apparently targeting the house of the district government administrator, Nuristani added.
