10 aid workers detained in Myanmar: UN

The UN said Friday that Myanmar’s government has held its humanitarian staff for “questioning” and that the government has refused to explain about the arrests.

“At the moment, some 10 UN and INGO (international non-government organisation) staff are kept in custody by the authorities of Rakhine state for questioning,” said a statement from the United nation’s humanitarian agency, OCHA.

The UN “has reported to government the situation on several occasions and has requested the government for information about each detained staff member.”

Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) said in a statement that six of its local staff have been among the arrested.

“We do not have full information on the reasons,” MSF said.

Human Rights Watch on Friday said some within Myanmar’s security forces have carried out “mass round-ups” and other abuses on Muslim communities.

“While the Burmese army has largely contained the sectarian violence, abuses by security forces against Rohingya communities appear to be on the upsurge in recent weeks,” HRW said using Myanmar’s colonial-era name.

“The mass arrests ongoing in northern Arakan (Rakhine) state seem to be discriminatory, as the authorities in these townships do not appear to be investigating or apprehending those suspected of criminal offences.”

This comes as a recent report by the government said more than 80 people were killed in western Myanmar in June due to a wave of communal violence.

Rakhine state has been scene of rioting, arson and a cycle of revenge attacks.

Over the past two years, waves of ethnic Muslims have attempted to flee by boats in the face of systematic oppression by the Myanmar government.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize them. They say the Rohingya are not native and classify them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in Myanmar for generations.
