According to a December 16 report of an independent commission of sexual violence in Dutch Catholic institutions, thousands of children suffered at the hands of priests and nuns.
The report is based on the study, which involved more than 34,000 people. The Commission found that one in ten children in the Netherlands was exposed to violence. Among children who had spent some of their childhood in Catholic institutions, this figure is twice as high, according to “Interfax” .
The Commission received 1,800 reported cases of sexual abuse in Catholic schools, seminaries and orphanages. The number of abuse cases is in fact higher, considering that less than 10% of victims of abuse speak out…
The report also says that the Catholic Church failed to cope with an increase in sexual violence cases reported, and therefore this resulting sexual abuse scandal was inevitable.
